English
Without words, without writing and without books there would be no history, there could be no concept of humanity. - Hermann Hesse (1877 - 1962)
English courses at Webb not only teach the fundamentals – grammar, writing skills, literary forms – but encourage students to dig deeper into the meanings expressed through the written word. Students study great classical and modern literature, but do it in a way that fosters not only an appreciation for the style but also for the cultural and historical themes that emerge. It’s not unusual for students to read a play or novel, analyze it, write their own assessment of the piece, and then study the way that piece relates to the music, film and art of the time. Students come away with skills in composition, persuasive writing and analytical thinking, and in the process develop their own literary tastes and voice.
