History
History is the witness that testifies to the passing of time; it illumines reality, vitalizes memory, provides guidance in daily life and brings us tidings of antiquity.
- Cicero (106 BC - 43 BC)
At Webb, the study of history is not presented as a list of dates and facts to memorize. Instead, it is viewed as a series of beliefs and interpretations of the events of the day. Coursework, then, incorporates novels, primary source documents, essays, audio recordings, and film that include the thoughts of the people alive at the time. But the study of history also goes beyond the walls of the classroom. For example, each year freshmen undertake a simulated archaeological dig with one team creating artifacts and another finding them and interpreting their meaning. Suddenly, deciphering the past takes on a whole new meaning.
Webb’s history department is also home to the study of economics, psychology, constitutional law and world cultures, providing students with new tools to study and understand people and events – both past and present.
