VWS Athlete of the Month:
Dana Edwards '11
VWS volleyball has just finished an amazing run to the CIF quarter-finals, and Dana Edwards has played a critical role in the team’s success. Dana is the team’s leader in assists, and currently holds the school record for assists with 53 during the match against Chadwick on October 24th. Coach Jack Coberly describes Dana as an inspirational leader. “She inspires the team with her hustle and positive attitude and she always has a smile and words of encouragement. Without her ability to set and track down balls we would not have a functioning team.”
WSC Athlete of the Month:
Andrew Lantz '10
Andrew Lantz has continuously improved during the season to become an elite runner. He is already among the top 15 runners in California at Div. 5 and, according to Coach Brian Caldwell, could very well be in the top 5 by the end of the year.
At the Mt. SAC invitational on October 24th, Andrew finished in the top 15 runners (among 12 ranked teams from both California and Arizona) and medaled. In the league finals, he finished in the top 10 (among 4 ranked teams in state) and medaled.
But it’s his attitude, hard work and determination that set Andrew apart. Coach Caldwell relates a story about Andrew’s performance in a training run, which includes the Mongo – a notoriously difficult uphill run. “After leading on each of the 10 Mongo repeats, we still had two remaining. We asked the boys to reach the top a little faster than the first 10 (which would be about 2:30). Andrew ran both remaining Mongos in under 2 minutes, which was a super-human effort – way above and beyond what was expected.”
