VWS Athlete of the Month:
Frannie Cormier '11
Frannie Cornier is, perhaps, one of the strongest Outside Hitters ever to play for VWS. Along with teammates Dana Edwards and Madison Fuelling, she qualified for the Junior Olympic tournament this summer with their club volleyball team. Her coach, Jack Coberly, describes her as being “consistently our best passer and hitter. She averages over three kills per game hitting, passes 2.5 on a 3 pt. scale and serves one ace per game.”
However, in the spirit of true teamwork, Frannie has had to step away from her strength and play different positions to make up for injury and illness on the team. Coach Coberly explains, “Against Rio Hondo she became a middle blocker, and against Aquinas she became a setter. Both matches were won in part because of the flexibility of the whole team, but highlighted by her outstanding play.”
“It’s a rare thing for an outstanding player to be so willing to move to a different position,” says Interim Athletic Director, Steve Wishek. “It means moving away from where you’re most comfortable and stretching your talents in a different direction. It also means sacrificing personal stats for the good of the team. Frannie has been willing to do this, and it has made a huge difference in the team’s performance as a whole.”
