Webb Debate Team Wins At Palm Springs HS
On Saturday, February 6th, 14 Webb debaters braved the grey, rainy weather and headed to Palm Springs for the second tournament of the year. Competing with teams representing six schools, Webb debaters exceeded their own expectations.
Before leaving for the tournament, the team created two goals: first, to raise their win average from 55% at the last debate to over 65%; and second, to raise their speaker point average from 78 to 80. The team succeeded on both counts – including achieving a win average of 70%. Brandon Baptista ’12 increased his speaker point average by over five points from the previous tournament.
Group success included the following Webb teams: Allen Isaacson ’12, Brandon Baptista ’12, and Lauren Herndon ’13 in fourth place, Jack Childress ’12, Marcos Lopez ’13, and Annisa Herrero ’13 in second place, and Elena Scott-Kakures ’11 and Dakota Santana-Grace ’11 in first place.
Overall performance awards went to: Raj Anand ’10 in third place and Dakota Santana-Grace ’11 in first place.
School awards were presented for percentage of wins and number of wins. Webb's five teams secured second place in the percentage of wins and first place in the number of wins - winning a total of 14 out of 20 debates.
