Foreign Language

Webb believes that language study is a vital part of any high school education, fostering an understanding of other cultures and preparing students to become citizens of the world. Our eclectic curriculum focuses on building practical communications skills through exposure to authentic language and culture, from news broadcasts and magazine articles to poetry and even soap operas.

Our small class sizes allow a seminar-like classroom format, going beyond the textbook to emphasize student participation and in-class language use. We challenge students to develop their idiomatic fluency with practical exercises like singing pop songs and writing and performing their own original skits and dialogues. Each student has ample opportunity to be heard, allowing them to gain confidence in writing, listening, and speaking that will serve them well in the real world.

Webb requires at least three years of language study, and we strongly recommend that all students complete four years of study. We offer comprehensive French and Spanish programs, including both honors and AP courses. This year Webb is launching a Chinese language program.

Foreign language teachers represent a variety of languages and experiences: three native Spanish speakers represent both Latin America and Spain; one Spanish teacher is fluent in Farsi and another is fluent in German and proficient in Mandarin Chinese and Korean; a French teacher is fluent in Arabic. The teachers of foreign languages at Webb have on average more than 10 years of experiences.

International travel is also promoted and available for students during school breaks and summer vacation. Recent trips have included France, Spain, Mexico, Ecuador and elsewhere.

H ighlights from 2010-2011 academic year:

  • All Spanish 1 students created amazingly creative and detailed 3D shoebox presentations 'ofrendas' commemorating the Mexican 'Day of the Dead' celebration in November.  The students honored their family members, friends, famous people who had passed away with very moving and thoughtful as well as beautiful creations.  In class, the students described in Spanish the importance of the deceased person they chose to honor.  Their projects were on display in the Old Schoolhouse hallway during the month of November and gave everyone who walked by an opportunity to pause and marvel at their beauty as well as quietly reflect.
  • All French students participated in French week celebration of all things Francophone in the fall.  The main event was the French themed dinner  served in the dining hall which featured a variety of delicious French cuisine.  Afterwards, the French students sang a song in French in Mudd auditorium before a screening of a French movie.  The entire Webb community enjoyed both the dinner and film.  Also during French week, French students created astonishingly intricate 3D projects of French architectural sites (Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triumph, etc.) which were displayed in the Old Schoolhouse hallway, once again, to the delight of all passerby.
