Q
What does the school do about anti-virus software?
-
A
The school requires anti-virus software for all boarding students that connect a computer to the school network. Each boarding student will have $35 charged to their student account. The tech staff will help students make sure that the software is installed and configured properly.
-
Q
Does the school keep my student’s machine from getting viruses, worms, or spyware?
-
A
The school does its best to keep the network virus free. Unfortunately, the latest worms and spyware require every person with a computer to take on the responsibility of keeping the network free of worms and viruses. Each machine needs to be updated with all critical security updates, checked regularly for spyware, and have anti-virus software scanning the system constantly. Any machine that is plugged into the Internet that does not have security patches and virus protection software will most likely be infected.
-
Q
What happens if a computer is infected with a worm, virus, or spyware?
-
A
As soon as a machine is detected with a worm, virus, or spyware it is disconnected from the network. When a student realizes that their machine has been disconnected from the network, they should bring the machine to the Fawcett Library tech office to be cleaned. Once the machine has been cleaned, the machine will be allowed back on the network.

Q
What types of computers do students use at The Webb Schools?
-
A
Students can use a Mac or PC for their school work. However, the Schools have standardized on using windows based computers in the labs and other public areas.
-
Q
Has Webb standardized on any particular software?
-
A
Microsoft Office is used throughout the school for all word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation tasks. Whether you have a Macintosh or PC computer, we strongly recommend that you purchase the latest version of Microsoft Office that will run on your machine. There is a student version that is available at most computer retail stores for under $150. Many classes require that assignments be turned in electronically. These files must be in the Microsoft Office format.

Q
How can my student connect to WEBBIE from a personal computer in the dorm?
-
A
There are several computers located on lower campus for student use. Students have data jacks in their dorm rooms and connect to the network through an Ethernet cable. If there are network settings on the computer from home they will need to be set back to the default settings to connect the machine to the WEBBIE network.
-
Q
Are students required to have computers?
-
A
No. Work which requires computers can be done on public access computers. However, nearly every student finds that the added convenience and flexibility of having their own computer is well worth the expense.
