VWS Softball vs. Chadwick Cancelled

VWS SB 3Thursday, March 18, the Vivian Webb softball team played a league game against Westridge. It was a tough fought battle but the team ended up losing 5-14. Even though the Lady Gauls lost there were many great plays in the game, including exceptional hitting by Katherine Kilmer '10, Megan Kilmer '12, and Mallory Thompson '13. Also, Emily Kan '11 made an amazing catch that came close to the fence. The Lady Gauls continue to make improvements by minimizing mistakes and maximizing their accomplishments. Keep it Gauls!!!!

 

Tuesday, March 19, the Vivian Webb Softball team played another league game vs. Mayfield. The Lady Gauls battled hard but lost the battle to Mayfield, 0-17. Much of the team’s success came from working together and motivating each with lots of encouragement, even though the Lady Gauls felt as though they didn’t play their best game. “It was just an off day. It wasn’t our best game, but we’ll do better next time,” said teammate Katie Heaston '10. —Shyla Watson '11

On Friday, March 12, the Vivian Webb softball team played a home game against Upland Christian. VWS struggled slightly in the first couple of innings but quickly redeemed themselves as the game progressed. “We thought we had them the first two innings based on their pitcher but they came out with a more talent then we expected,” said Katie Heaston '10. With their second mercy game of the season, the Vivian Webb ladies won with a score of 17-7. “It took a while to adjust but we came back and once again hit the ball extremely well,” said Heaston. —Shyla Watson '11

VWS SB 1Tuesday, March 9, the Vivian Webb Schools varsity softball team played a home game against Sherman Indian. Improving drastically from the first game, the Gauls won by a mercy score of 17-2. Megan Kilmer '12 and her sister Katherine Kilmer '10 both hit very well while Emily Kan’s '11 defense shined. Other contributions came from Marley Crean '12, who made the first double play of the year, and Carley Nagel '10, who pitched a complete game. According to Coach Robert Sakaguchi, the girls’ determination in practice has really helped them improve. With such a great outcome versus Sherman Indian, the rest of the season looks very promising. —Shyla Watson '11

Friday, March 5, the Webb Schools varsity softball team played Environmental Charter School. Although the final outcome was not favorable losing 16-7, the girls played well and fought hard for the first game of the year. Some highlights came from sophomore Megan Kilmer '12 who went 2-3 with a triple and 2 RBIs. Kilmer’s sister, Katherine Kilmer '10 also did well. Katherine went 3-3 and knocked one over the fence. Other contributions came from Marley Crean '12 went 2-3 with an RBI.

 

“For our first game we did pretty well,” said Marley Crean. “Chiara Wilridge did great playing outfield, and everybody did really well for only one and half weeks of practice.” Crean is right, for their first game the girls did really well and it was easy to tell they put in their best effort. Their next game, as well as the rest of the season, is sure to show much improvement. —Shyla Watson '11

VWS Softball Season Outlook

As the 2010 softball season has officially begun there are many returners and some newcomers. Clara Chon '11, Marley Crean '12, Lindsey Crowe '10, Katie Heaston '10, Emily Kan '11, Katherine Kilmer '10, Megan Kilmer '10, Carley Nagel '10, Carly Paris '10, and Pooja Vora '11 will all return to the team this year. New this season is Chiara Wilridge '13, Mallory Thompson '13, Rachel Sang '13, and Alex Faura '13. Katherine Kilmer led the team in hits last season and will provide this year’s team with strong leadership ability. 

 

Also new this season is Coach Robert Sakaguchi. When asked about the goals for this season he simply said, “I just want to improve everyone’s skills so that it strengthens their current abilities to play as a team. This will help us have a good season.” Coach Sakaguchi also believes that working hard at practice is the key to their success. Many of the team members seem excited, motivated, and ready to succeed. The team’s talent, experience, motivation, excitement, and coaching staff seem to compliment a great combination to have a very successful season. —Shyla Watson '11
