Dear alumni, parents and friends:
Thompson and Vivian Webb imagined a school where boys were known for their character not their parents’ ability to pay tuition. They envisioned a school where diversity in all respects – including economic – would enrich the humanity of the community and the education of the boys. They envisioned a school bound by honor and bound to honor exemplary teachers who devoted themselves to the care of their boys. To realize this vision Thompson Webb called for the development of a healthy endowment.
Similarly, Thompson and Vivian Webb understood the need for the renewal and replacement of facilities. They envisioned a setting that fostered self-discovery, maturation, and learning – a setting conducive to walking, conversing, reflecting, observing, imagining. The beautiful signature buildings constructed with their guidance – and their own hands – attest to their vision for such a campus home and learning environment. But of course, that work was necessarily left incomplete, so Thompson Webb called for the building of “a fine plant.”
It is our goal to realize this vision and to fulfill this promise. Although Thompson Webb could not imagine the Webb of today, he would surely recognize the Webb of today as his school. He would recognize a school that is great because of its people and its principles, and he would be proud to know that we understand the importance of and have a vision for fulfilling our promise.
Yours faithfully,
Susan A. Nelson
