    Teacher Appreciation Day

    Scott Nichols
    May 7, 2013

Today is “Teacher Appreciation Day” in the United States, and I feel our teachers deserve more than just a random day of recognition. So I’m going to ask for your help in honoring the amazing faculty here at Webb.

That low rumble you might have heard Monday morning was The Webb Schools’ engine starting back up after a two week Spring Break. Classes are back in session, the athletic teams are geared up and ready for action, and our arts programs and clubs are in full swing. Let’s take a peek at some recent news that may have been overlooked in the relaxation of break:

Sarah Lantz: Part of the Equation

    Scott Nichols
    March 18, 2013

Sarah Lantz has been teaching math for three years, and is the Head of South Hutchinson Dormitory at The Webb Schools. Prior to being a math teacher, she worked in Webb’s Development Office. She lives on campus with her husband, Ray, two daughters, Lucy and Annalise, and their Corgi, Sonny. In the second in an on-going series of interviews with Webb faculty, Sarah and I had a nice chat over dinner in the Price Dining Hall last week.

  • The Beauty of Webb

    December 28, 2012

Here is a gallery celebrating the wonderful landscape and natural beauty of the campus in winter. This is not meant to be a difinitive collection of photos, but is instead fifteen scenes that have caught my eye in the last month or so. Happy New Year!

What’s your favorite part of the holiday season? The warming glow of a fire? Singing carols and sharing hearty laughter among friends and family? Reading a poem that pokes fun at faculty and students alike?

    A Calming Candlelight

    Scott Nichols
    December 13, 2012

Anyone who is familiar with the rigor of Webb’s academics, and I’m guessing that’s anyone reading this blog, can appreciate the value in taking a break and resting. The students are nearing the end of the first semester on December 21, at which point they’ll disappear on Winter Break, to return in the second week of the New Year. This morning’s chapel period offered a break of a different sort: The Candlelight Concert.

  • Theme Week 2012

    Scott Nichols
    November 6, 2012

“Forever Young, I want to be, Forever Young…” so goes the song by Alphaville ** - popularized recently by Jay-Z, and now used as the anthem and subject of this year’s Theme Week. Yes, this year students are looking back to their youth and digging deep into the memory banks of nostalgia to those long-forgotten days of the 1990’s with the theme of “Forever Young.”

    All Hallow's Eve

    Scott Nichols
    November 1, 2012

I consider myself to be very fortunate to have the opportunity of living and working at The Webb Schools - case-in-point was last night’s Halloween celebration. A costumed formal dinner was followed by students trick-or-treating at the faculty residences on campus. The Ruddick Room was transformed into a haunted house by the Dorm Councilors. As one faculty member put it, “Best. Webb. Halloween. Ever.”

Part of my professional background includes working on a number of state, local, and national political campaigns. So naturally I was thrilled to be participating in Webb's 2012 Election Symposium Day - an entire day geared towards the students learning about American and international politics.

  • Looking Forward

    Scott Nichols
    August 27, 2012

So, as we begin the new academic year at The Webb Schools, the big question on my mind was, “What is everyone looking forward to?” I roamed campus during the recent Opening Weekend with my camera and asked students and faculty that same question. What I got were unscripted, genuine responses that are as varied as our student body.

  • The Best of Webb 2011-2012

Back in January I posted a list of our most read articles for the first half of the year, and it served as a nice way to recap the exciting and fast-paced life at Webb. There’s so much that happens on a yearly, monthly, and daily basis, if you blink you may miss something. To that end, I have revisited the Google Analytics for the entire year and present the following list of our top website stories and galleries.

    LA Photography Trip

“Photography captures and preserves a moment in time that would otherwise be lost,” Ryan Au ’12 said in his Chapel talk last week. If there could be a simple mantra to the loose organization of photography enthusiasts who have been meeting during lunch periods this past year, this would be it.

  • Listen! (new video series) (part two)

    Scott NIchols
    April 10, 2012

Back in October, I posted the first in what will be a plentiful series of videos of student musicians at Webb. In the previous series, I had this idea to bring the musicians outside of their normal rehearsal spaces and have them perform somewhere on Webb’s 72-acre campus. This plan works really well when dealing with a violinist and a banjo player – not so much with a harpist and two pianists. Regardless of their location, I am happy to once again present a nice diversion from the everyday with two more videos of Webb students.
