Webb will be well represented at this year's Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, the largest and most prestigious book festival in the country. The festival takes place April 21-22 at various locations on the USC campus, and more than 140,000 people are expected to attend. Notable authors who will present include T.C. Boyle, Aimee Bender, historian Mike Davis, Judy Blume, and celebrity authors John Cusack, Tori Spelling, Molly Shannon, and Sugar Ray Leonard. The festival is free, but some events are ticketed. John Scalzi '87, who has written 8 novels including Old Man's War (which is being adapted for the big screen by Paramount Studios) will be a panelist on Sunday at 10:00 am ("Fiction: World Building" in the Davidson Continuing Education Center) and at 3:00 pm ("The Nerds Shall Inherit the Earth" in Bovard Auditorium). John is President of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, and he's been nominated for Hugo and Nebula awards. He has also written 8 other non-fiction books as well.
Webb's Director of Instituitional Advancment, Joe Woodward, is the author of a new biography Alive Inside the Wreck about the life of American novelist Nathanael West. He will be a panelist at 11:00 am ("Nonfiction: Reporting the Arts" in the Hancock Foundation). Joe is a two-time winner of a Los Angeles Press Club Award.
On Saturday, April 21st, Goodreads (founded by Otis Chandler '96) is co-sponsoring The Young Literati's Book Drop BASH! at the Los Angeles Central Library, Downtown. Shepard Fairey, who co-chairs the Young Literati, was a guest speaker at Webb in 2011. Click here to read about his visit to Webb.
