Webb Gauls started off their game against Lucerne Valley with Joe Shaver '13 pitching the first inning. No scores were made until the bottom of the first when Aaron DiGiamarino '13 hit a home run and sent Ian Chavez '14 and Britton Bentley '12 home, making the score 3-0. Sam Woodward '12 and Nick Gollin '13 took to home, making the score 5-0. The game settled down until the bottom of the third inning when Jordan Veiga '13 ran home from first after Austin Plyley '12 hit an out fielding ball. The inning closed out and Shaver went up to the pitcher’s mound again and shut out every Lucerne player. By the bottom of the fourth inning DiGiamarino and Woodward had scored two more runs making the score 8-0. Shaver and Plyley quickly followed with two more, leading the score to 10-0 by the bottom of the fourth.

What came next surprised everyone in the stands, the dugout, and maybe even Lucerne Valley. It was the top of the fifth inning and incredibly close to being called a mercy game when Coach Stodgel pulled Plyley, a senior of the Webb Schools, out to warm up. Plyley, who, according to the avid baseball fans around the crowd, was warming up to pitch his first game. The Webb crowd erupted into applause as Plyley walked up to the pitcher’s mound. To the crowd’s delight, he struck out the Lucerne batter and when the next batter actually hit, Gollin stopped the ball by first and ended the game with a ten-point lead.

Overall Record: 19-3
League Record: 9-1

Week Ahead: Away against Pasadena Poly on 5/8 and Flintridge on 5/10.
