In a year marked with several Webb records bested and new personal records set, the VWS and WSC Track and Field teams had another strong season of competition this spring as both teams finished in second place in League competition.
Senior standout Amara Berry finished as “one of the greatest champions in Webb history,” according to Coach John Lawrence. Berry’s season concluded in the CIF Finals where she finished 10th overall out of four CIF divisions in the 200m, setting new school records in both the 100m and 200m sprints. Berry reflected on her season this way: “I would be sad if this was the end of my career, but it isn’t. This is just the beginning. I’ll be sad when I finish my last track meet as a senior in college.”
Andy Lee ’12 also had a stellar season as a senior, finishing as League MVP and setting a new Webb record in the Triple Jump at 44’5”.
Zach Zanft ’12 qualified for CIF Finals and jumped 6’1”, his second highest ever. He finished his Webb career as the League Champion in the high jump, and third highest Webb jumper in history. Zanft also finished second in League in the high hurdles.
Not to be overshadowed by the seniors, two of Webb’s juniors had tremendous showings in the CIF Finals this year. Miya Wensley set a new school record of 37’0” in the triple jump, and is currently in second place for the long jump, and third place for the high jump in Webb’s record books. Nick Pankratz ’13 set a new personal record of 6’3” during CIF Finals in the high jump, and is just 2” away from breaking the school record. He finished in third place in Division 4 high jump competition this year.
Even though Webb’s Track and Field team was not as large as the first place teams in the competitive Prep League, they made up for it with their determination and strong finishes in each event at the League Finals in early May. Ivie Tokunboh ’12 placed second in the 300m low hurdles, third in the high hurdles, and fourth in the high jump. Freshman pole vaulter Taylor Leonard tied her personal best and moved to third on Webb’s all-time best pole vault list. Finally, the girls’ 4x100m relay team of Berry, Wensely, Alicia Zheng ’13, and Nancy Cheng ’12 won their event by 0.01 seconds, the closest victory in Prep League and Webb history and qualified for CIF Finals.
The WSC team had exceptional performances in League Finals as well. The “Three Amigos,” as they became known as, of Zanft, Pankratz, and freshman Stirling McCulloch finished 1-2-3 in the high jump. Zanft went on to place second in the high hurdles with TJ Fenton ’13 finishing closely behind him in third. The 4x100m relay team of Ricky Gonzales ’15, Steve Agajanian ’12, Andrew Kim ’13, and Landon Taflinger ’13 finished in third place and ran their best time of the season. And in only his third race ever, Daniel Hernandez ’13 finished in third place in the low hurdles.
