It’s official…summer is here! And, for the young alumni of The Webb Schools this is an exciting time, one filled with internships, volunteering and travel. Read what just some of the members of the Classes of 2008-2011 are up to…

This summer seems to be the summer of internships. After finishing up his first year at Carnegie Mellon, Sean James ’11 is currently exploring software development at Autodesk, a world leader in 3D design, engineering and entertainment software. Also working in the world of technology is David Bay ’10 (USC) who landed a much coveted internship at Intel. “I'm learning a lot about the company and about working in a professional engineering environment, and so far it has been a wonderful experience,” shares David. Too add to the list tech-savvy young alumni is Nancy Blayney ’09 (College of Charleston) who for the next eight weeks is at IBM, serving as a marketing writer intern.

Trying her hand in the non-profit sector is new Alumni Council Regional Representative for Philadelphia Katherine Kilmer ’10 (Bryn Mawr). While at the Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law in Los Angeles, she will be assisting with class action suits filed for undocumented immigrants and students seeking citizenships. “I'm really excited to spend this summer at the Center, as well as preparing to go abroad to Greece next spring!” Also serving the local community is Kate Sim ’10 (Harvard) who will be working with the Domestic Violence Project at the Los Angeles Courthouse, helping provide legal services and other types of support to victims of this terrible abuse. During her summer, moreover, she will present at the fifth annual Independent School Gender Project Conference, addressing the topics of international women's rights and student feminist activism. In attendance will be none other than Director of Counseling Melanie Bauman, who is bringing along a few of our current students to partake in the workshops.

Visiting our nation’s capital this summer? You might run into Noah Woodward ’10 (Davidson) who is working at the Lex Mundi Pro Bono Foundation. By providing social entrepreneurs with access to critically needed legal assistance, the Foundation joins the global entrepreneur movement for positive social change. Or how about traveling to the Big Apple? If so, see if you can catch up with Bank of America Merrill Lynch private wealth management intern Ariel Fan ’10 (Columbia). In her spare time, she will also be furthering the development of Scratch NYC, a non-profit philanthropy organization that aims to raise money for the less fortunate through the re-sale of vintage apparel to local college campus groups. In San Francisco at the United Religions Initiative is Julia Jameson ’09 (Byrn Mawr). She will be exploring interfaith projects and social justice initiatives in the North American region among taking in the local sites. And hoping that Webbies will visit him out in the windy city is Will Baker ’10 (DePaul University) who will be working at Devil Dawgs Chicago and getting ready for the busy year ahead. At school, Will is a public relations coordinator for his fraternity Pi Kappa Alpha and the athletics department’s marketing coordinator. He will also be traveling to Denver, Colorado soon for a conference with his fraternity’s Lambda Tau chapter.

Dabbling in the arts this summer is newly declared photography major Candice Tzeng ’10 (Loyola Marymount University). Working at Live Nation, Candice is excited to pursue her passion by helping out with the entertainment company’s many marketing campaigns. A recipient of the Brooks Fellowship, Devon Doherty ’10 (USC) will attend a ceramic workshop at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass, Colorado this August. But first, she will be interning with the artist Kathryn Andrews at her studio in Los Angeles, and working as an assistant lab technician at the USC ceramics studio.

For our young alumni, working at a camp also seems to be a popular way to spend the summer. Raffi Kiureghia ’09 (Reed College) thinks his experience at Little Red School House will be especially useful since he has recently decided to acquire certification in Adolescent Education. Similarly, Eva Holzner ’11 (Barnard) is excited for her stint at the American Jewish University’s Camp Alonin. She will be a counselor here until the start of her internship at Caremore Health Group.

At Claremont McKenna College is Alexis De La Rosa ’11 (Bryn Mawr) who will be researching with a psychology professor there. More specially, Alexis will be working with kids 4-7 years in age who are bilingual in both Spanish and English, and testing their memory recall and language development. As Alexis further shares, “the project focuses on developmental psychology, and the differences between monolingual and bilingual children in terms of how social and environmental contexts affect school performance.” Fellow classmate Lauren Taflinger ’11 (University of Richmond) will also be nearby, volunteering on Catalina Island with a conservancy there.

Studying abroad this summer is Matt Abrams ’10 (UCLA) who will take part in an eight week physics program at Sussex University. Hoping to catch up with him is fellow classmate John Hur ’10 (UCSD) who will be in France studying jazz history. “I'm very excited for the program…it will be taught by Cecil Lytle, a Professor of Music at UCSD since 1974, who performs as a pianist in jazz venues all across the globe,” shares John. “He has scheduled us to meet his fellow Parisian jazz composers and musicians, and has granted us access to the main jazz venues in the city of Paris.”
