The Alf Museum in Madagascar

Continuing a long tradition of Peccary Trips overseas, a crew of 20 students, parents, alumni, trustees, and friends traveled to Madagascar for the experience of a lifetime. In addition to touring many of the country's ecological wonders, the group also assisted in paleontological fieldwork in northwestern Madagascar. Stony Brook University and University of Antananarivo are gratefully acknowledged for their assistance in making this trip happen!

  • Isalo National Park, a spectacular set of rock exposures in southern Madagascar.
  • Giant hissing cockroaches were easy to find in some places.
  • A literal plague of locusts was not good news for local farm crops.
  • Ring-tailed lemurs were in abundance in many of the areas we visited.
  • The Alf Museum group collected many examples of marine fossils (including shells, corals, parts of sea urchins, and shark teeth), contributing to the sample for a master's student from Madagascar.
