Museum Hosts Book Launch for Ray Alf Biography

Over 90 alumni, parents, trustees and friends of Webb gathered at the Alf Museum on March 1 to celebrate the release of Moment of Time: The Life of Raymond Alf and The History of The Peccary Society. The 350-page biography, written by Museum Director Dr. Don Lofgren and Director of Parent Relations and Special Events Jennifer Liu ’05 is an incredible tribute to Ray Alf, founder of the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology. The book features interviews with over 80 former students and faculty, as well as members of the Alf family, that help capture the passion and spirit of Alf. The evening was a special way to celebrate the history of the museum and its founder, while also honoring the incredible work that is being done today. During the event, Lofgren read excerpts from the book and spoke about his own experiences with Alf. Click here to watch.

By all accounts Alf was a truly remarkable person. His enthusiasm and energy knew no bounds and were infectious to all those who encountered him. He lived on Webb’s campus for 70 years (1929 to 1999) and during that time, created a paleontology museum and program that has spanned generations. Webb is the only high school in the world that has a nationally accredited paleontology museum on its campus, offering students opportunities for discovery and unbounded learning. With the addition of fully-equipped research and fossil preparation labs, the museum’s ability to support the work of Webb students and museum staff is unsurpassed.

Alf, who passed away in 1999, would be amazed at how his once modest paleontology program has grown into an internationally recognized scientific research institution.

To receive a copy of the book, make a gift of $100 or more designated to the Alf Museum at webb.org/giving.

  • Class of 2019

Members of the Class of 2019 faced tremendous competition this year as they applied to colleges and universities across the country and around the world. While each felt the stress of the selective admission process, our seniors proved once again that good character coupled with a dedication to your studies really pays off.

In 2019 we saw 100 percent of the graduating class admitted to a selective four-year college or university—90 percent will attend a college ranked in the top 10 percent in the nation. On average each of our students applied to eight colleges and was admitted to four or more of them.

We congratulate members of the Class of 2019 for their amazing college choices and wish them well on the adventures ahead!
