Webb in Asia: Spring 2019

In April, Head of Schools Taylor Stockdale, Mrs. Anne Stockdale, Director of College Guidance Hector Martinez and Director of Institutional Advancement Dutch Barhydt headed to Asia for five major receptions and many individual meetings and appointments. At each event, Mr. Stockdale spoke eloquently about the state of Webb today, the upcoming Centennial campaign and debuted the Goldman Sachs video featuring Webb students and faculty. Mr. Martinez talked about college admissions and the impressive results from the Class of 2019 and Mr. Barhydt spoke about Webb’s Parent and Alumni programs and their importance in the upcoming Centennial and beyond, and the importance of the lifelong Webb alumni network.

In Hong Kong, Samuel Lee and Stella Leung P ’15, ’19 (Marcus and Gavin), Tony and Cheri Chiu P ’20 (Jayden) and Leslie and Eva Fong P ’20 (Ping) hosted a Webb Reception at The Hong Kong Bankers Club. The festive evening included alumni and current families as well as new students.

The following day, Tim Sun ’89 hosted an Alumni Dinner at One Harbour Road, the largest gathering of alumni in Hong Kong to date with 20 attendees. Alumni in attendance represented three decades of Webb graduates (1983-2013).

For the first time ever in Shenzhen, Yiduan Zheng and Hanlin Feng P ’21 (Jimmy) and Lixin Li and Shihong Peng P ’20 (Cecilia) hosted a Webb Reception at the Four Seasons Hotel. It was a wonderful event, welcoming newly admitted students and their families to the Webb community and celebrating the success of our current Webb students.

Moving on to Shanghai, Shi An Liu and Ping Xu P ’13 (Alyssia) and Xueping Xu and Elina Xu P ’20 (Albert) hosted a Webb Reception at the historic Miele House. There was a fantastic turnout of over 50 alumni, parents and newly admitted students.

Finally, in Beijing, Ning Du and Tracy Sun P ’21 (Alivia) hosted a Webb Reception at the Tian Yuan Club overlooking the city. Alumni and parents joined the Webb contingent in welcoming newly admitted students to the Webb community and celebrating our current Webb families. The newly admitted students especially enjoyed the evening, sitting with Mr. and Mrs. Stockdale for dinner.

We would like to thank our many parents for their generosity and support who helped make this trip possible by providing guidance and such gracious friendship in each city. To all who attended an event, we thank you for your commitment to Webb and look forward to our next visit with you in Asia or on the Webb campus.

  • Honor and Moral Courage

    Christopher Michno
Mention the word “honor” in a crowded room and you are likely to suffer quizzical glances followed by silence. Honor, to many, seems an awkward, unfashionable, even antiquated concept—something to contemplated in private or through the scrim of heroic fiction, like the blood feuds of the Capulets and Montagues, or the Grangerfords and Shepherdsons.

Yet, Head of Schools Taylor Stockdale contends, there is something important to be gleaned from the discussion of honor, something that has been missing from our cultural climate, broadly, and in education for some time—a focus on moral clarity, of discerning, very simply, right from wrong. Stockdale insists such clarity is possible even though it doesn’t always come naturally. “You have to work at it,” but the benefits, he adds, is that moral clarity allows you to make good decisions.
