Webb Schools Name Assistant Head

Michael Hoe, a Webb alum with degrees from Brown and Harvard, has been named assistant head of schools of The Webb Schools effective July 2023. Hoe, who is now Webb’s director of studies, was chosen after a national search.

“Mr. Hoe rose to the top of a very competitive national pool,” said Dr. Theresa Smith, who will become Webb’s seventh head of schools in July. “He is a talented educator and administrator whose deep affection for the Webb community is palpable. I can think of no one better to serve in this role.”

The assistant head oversees daily operations, including academics, faculty, residential life, student advising, student activities, athletics and student discipline.

Hoe, who graduated from Webb in 2004, earned a Bachelor of Science in neuroscience from Brown University and a Master of Education from Harvard University. An educator for 15 years, he previously served in multiple roles at Noble and Greenough School in Massachusetts.

He returned to Webb in 2019. In addition to his administrative duties, Hoe teaches in Webb’s Science Department and has held secondary roles in residential life and the student advising program. He is a fellow in the National Association of Independent Schools’ prestigious Aspiring School Heads Program.

“Mr. Hoe’s tireless efforts in steering our academic program during the pandemic both online and in our return to campus are especially noteworthy,” Smith said.

Hoe is eager to assist as Webb shifts over the next several years from the two-school model it has followed since 1981 to a one-school model.

“I’m really honored to be selected,” Hoe said. “It’s an exciting time to be at Webb, not just as an educator, but also as an alum. We are about to embark on something that has never been done before – reimagining Webb’s program in a way that celebrates our innovative and unbounded spirit while also honoring our history. I hope to continue to make Webb proud.”
