We will be hearing from FCD - Freedom From Chemical Dependency - a program that we use yearly to address the realities, challenges and perceptions students hold about drug and alcohol use. Students hear from a speaker that addresses grade-specific aspects of substance use. Each speaker has a personal story, about their own use as well and this is included. FCD also works with us to run the Student Attitudes and Behavior Survey (SABS) which looks at students reported use and attitudes about substances. One of the major tenets of FCDs work is that humans respond to social norms. If we perceive that something is going on with our peers, we are more likely to be drawn to it ourselves. The survey works to undermine student perception of their peers' substance use - they broadly and hugely overestimate the use of substances on the part of their peers - as a way to realign behavior with healthier social norms. FCD will share the survey results with an eye towards helping parents understand what constitutes high-risk behavior, what is really "normal" with teens, specifically Webb teens, as well as ways in which they may help to reaffirm healthy behavior and perceptions.
