Dolly Bai '14 on an Archaelogical Excavation in Israel

Dolly Bai ’14 recently spent time on an archaeological excavation in Israel. The dig site was in northern Israel by the Golan in an area called Omrit. She participated as a funded research assistant to one of her Williams College professors.

In the 2000s, a team from Macalaster College excavated and published the Roman temple at the same site. The current research on the area is led by University of North Carolina and focuses on the settlements surrounding the temple, only a small portion of which is exposed and free of mines.

Dolly has dug at Omrit for two seasons and this year was assistant supervisor in a team of five. Her experience on the excavations fits well with her interest in the competing use of antiquities by scholars, private collectors, and political groups. About her experiences, Dolly said, “It’s been really cool to study material culture and archaeological methodology in the field.”
