Apollo Thomas '17 Signs with Pomona Pitzer

Frank Dariano
Webb School of California football has its first official college commit as team defensive leader Apollo Thomas will attend Pitzer College in the fall and play for Pomona-Pitzer. The Webb Schools held a signing ceremony for Apollo on Monday, February 13th on campus.

Thomas says his path to Pomona-Pitzer began in the summer before his senior year at Webb. After his father, Webb Head Coach Amahl Thomas, got in contact with the coaching staff. After attending a summer football camp and going on an overnight visit in the fall, Thomas told the coaching staff he was willing to commit. He was accepted into Pitzer College where he plans to study pre-law.

Thomas says the Sagehens staff is scouting him out to play defensive end. It’s a position he excelled at for Webb, leading the Gauls with 137 tackles and 14.5 sacks in his senior year. He also caught six touchdowns as Webb’s tight end. Thomas was named team MVP and received an honorable mention on the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin’s 2016 all-area football team.

“It means a lot”, says Thomas of playing college football. He says he doesn’t want to “follow in the footsteps of his father”, who played wide receiver at UC-Santa Barbara, but to “do better than him.” “They’re really excited about having him,” said Coach Thomas adding that it has been “a long journey” for Apollo and football. He says his son was initially focused on basketball at Webb. “I told him he would be my first recruit, if I couldn’t recruit him I wouldn’t be able to recruit any other players, and then he just fell in love with the sport.” The Thomas family is also excited about being able to attend all of Apollo’s games. They have two younger children, Savannah '18, and a son who hopes to attend Webb next year.

Thomas, who also got looks from University of Redlands and UC-Davis, says he will take the knowledge he gained on the Webb gridiron to Pomona-Pitzer, namely “to stay tough, endure hardships, be functional, and know what to look for in a teammate.” Last month, he played in the San Gabriel Valley East-West Football All-Star game, as one of the few small school players in the lineup, and in the inaugural 215 Football All-Star Classic.

  • The Week @ Webb - Theme Week Edition

    Scott Nichols
The Week @ Webb is a unique look into the activities both on and off Webb's campus. This past week was our annual class spirit event called Theme Week. Each grade level dresses up in the announced theme for four days to gain points for their respective class. At the end of the week, each of the classes performs a skit that will also count towards their overall point total. It's a hilarious week for students and faculty alike, so I hope you enjoy some of the standout costumes and images I collected in this gallery.
