WSC Baseball Season Preview

Frank Dariano
Webb School of California Baseball looks to be in prime position of reaching the CIF-SS Division Six playoffs. The 2017 Gauls return six of nine starters from the 2016 team that went 13-9, finished in third in the San Joaquin League, and was eliminated in the first round of CIF.

Like all teams in the CIF-SS, WSC must operate under the new standards for resting pitchers based on pitch counts. Passed in January, the new rules require any pitcher to have a day’s rest after throwing 31-50 pitches in a start, two days’ rest after throwing 51-75 pitches in a day, and three days’ rest for more than 76 pitches. However, Coach Stodgel has already been giving his pitchers a days’ rest after 30 pitches, and says the team’s overall goal is to take the season “one game at a time.” He says every player on the team will play a role.

A pair of four-year varsity starters will lead Webb: infielder Adrian Alvarez ‘17 and inflielder/RHP Spencer Stewart ’17. Fellow four-year varsity player Wyatt Albert ’17 will split time between the pitcher’s mound and the outfield, while junior Blake Pedersen, sophomore Eric Evans, and freshman Ryan Bridges will all have time on the mound as well. Stodgel also points to outfielder J.J. Cunningham ’19, infielder Eddie Moreira ’19, and catcher Alex Cardenas ’20 as being key players.

The San Joaquin League once again looks to be loaded in 2017, with eight-time defending league champions Capistrano Valley Christian already having players committed to schools like UCLA, BYU, and UC-Irvine. Stodgel also says Saddleback Valley Christian and Southlands Christian will be well-coached teams, while newcomer Avalon will bring a fresh challenge to the league.

  • The Week @ Webb - Together in January

    Scott Nichols
The Week @ Webb is a periodic photojournal of events on and off Webb's campus. Did it feel like January lasted 31,000 days instead of just 31? I know that for me, it's important to spend as much time as I can with other people when life gets really busy. We all do better when we surround ourselves with friends and family and that's what I tried to capture in this latest gallery.

Taking stock. This is how it begins—simply though completely. After more than a year of planning, gathering data, meeting, discussing, writing and rewriting—and after a four-day campus stay by our CAIS/WASC visiting committee (California Association of Independent Schools / Western Association of Schools and Colleges)—the evaluation work is done.
