Webb Track and Field Season Preview

Frank Dariano
Coach Parker, calls her new venture “almost a dream come true”, and adding “it’s absolutely wonderful to be a head coach, I’m very humbled and appreciative of this opportunity…Webb is a phenomenal school, I believe in higher education and individual success so it’s perfect for me.”

Chanel Parker is a six-time All American, with most of her accolades coming in hurdles. She ran track for California State University-Dominguez Hills, and won a national championship as part of the Toros’ womens’ 4x400 meter relay team. After graduating with honors from CSU-DH in 2012 with a B.A. in Psychology, Parker trained for the Olympics for several years. She competed for a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team until 2015, with her career best time in the 100 meter hurdles just eight-tenths of a second off the world record. She calls being a head coach one of her biggest goals and says Webb will be a good fit for her “because it is a small school and team, we were between 16-22 [athletes] at Dominguez Hills; I’ve run teams up to 90 people [so] a smaller team makes individual results more important.” She says she wants to work with each Webb athlete individually to incorporate their “goals and feelings and interests into the team, [to know] what would they like to learn, to inspire them and give them the best work outs as much as possible.”

The 2017 Gauls will feature new assistant coaches as well in Melody Rivera and Leah Rogstad. Coach Parker says they will have a bevy of talented athletes to work with. Kelli Henry ’18 is already showing promise in both the 100 meter hurdles and the long jump, while Juliana Base ’19 is set to be a strong sprinter and Brigid Corbin ’19 should excel in the hi-jump, shot put, and 4x400 meter relay. The Webb boys will feature a trio of strong hurdlers in Robbie Reimer II ’20 (300 meters), Spencer Easley ’18 (300 meters), and Simon Dawson ’19 (100 hurdles). Both the boys’ and girls’ relay teams should be very strong as well. In particular, Parker says Chris Halliburton ’20, Nick Johnson ’19, and Apollo Thomas ’17 will team with Easley to create a strong boys’ unit. Among the field events, Jeffrey Ran ’18 and Adriana Fung ’17 are looking strong in the pole vault, while Edison Adler ’19 and Matt Martinez ’19 will be solid in the shot put.
