WSC Tennis Season Preview

The Gauls return two singles starters and two starting doubles pairs from last year’s team that went 13-3 and went undefeated the Ambassador League. The players “sponge off each other in how fast they learn,” says Head Coach Ron Martinez. He says their quick learning style makes up for the fact that most of the team doesn’t play year-round.

Deepak Tummala ’17, who went to the round of 16 in CIF Individuals in 2016, is the leader of what Coach Ronnie Martinez calls “a full team.” Tummala, who is ranked in Southern California and is receiving attention from collegiate tennis teams like Emory University, will be Martinez’s #1 singles player. Tom Liu ’18 and Ramos Wu ’17 round out the singles rotation. Martinez says he’s been very happy with newer players like Juan Pablo Calderoni ’19, Tony Jun ’18, and Andrew Shen ’19.

WSC’s doubles team features five returning players among the six slots. Seniors Darren Hsu and Raphael Huang are the number one pair, while Parsa Ariane ’17 and Nick Dodds ’17 will be the number two team. Junior Kia Nalbandi, also a returning player, will team with Calderoni on the #3 pairing.

Martinez says the Gauls “should win” the Ambassador League once again, adding that Arrowhead Christian should give Webb a tough challenge. Webb has started the year with an 18-0 win over West Covina, a 17-1 win over Covina, a 15-3 win over Tarbut V’Torah, and a 15-3 loss to Pasadena Poly.

Mid-Season and End of Season Montages will be posted at:
