Webb Swimming and Diving Season Preview

Frank Dariano
Head Coach Ken Rosenfeld says while his team lost several top boys to graduation last year, the Gauls “look a lot stronger in terms of the middle finishers.” This should allow Webb to stay competitive and have a very well rounded team throughout the year.

Webb School of California’s top swimmers include Brandon Fang ’17, who holds two records in the relays for Webb. Rosenfeld says he will be very strong in both the backstroke and I.M. Euson Hui ’18 will be WSC’s main swimmer in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, and 200 meter relays. Mitchell Fargo ’17, who holds several relay records, will be a top sprinter for the boys, while water polo teammates Will Donahue ’18 and Stephen Silides ’17 look to be top distance swimmers. Senior Ilya Petrov is WSC’s longest serving captain. Rosenfeld calls his a “solid worker”. As far as top underclassmen, Rosenfeld points to Harrison Lee ’20, whom he says is “just quick” in both the breaststroke and butterfly. Marty Hild ’19 won’t be eligible to compete until April but will be a “very versatile” option in the pool.

Vivian Webb’s swimmers will be led by Rylie Brick ’19, who already came within two seconds of tying her record in the 100 breaststroke on Friday, set four VWS records last year. Along with the 100 breast, Rosenfeld says she is especially strong in the 200 I.M. Fellow sophomore Lindsay Jung holds the school record in the 500 freestyle and will try to break the record for the 200 free this year. Emily “Mei Mei” Chu ’17 will be top swimming in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Fresh off a high scoring season for VWS Water Polo, Mary Davis ’19 will be new on the swim team this year. Rounding out the best of what Rosenfeld calls “a deep team” are Brene Malekow ’17 (100 fly, 100 breast) and Allison Lilley ‘19 (holds two relay records).

Among the team’s top divers will be Claire Wagner ’19 and Amanda Wang ’20. They will be working with new diving coach Peran Hall. VWS Water Polo coach Tom Jurczak will be the team’s assistant coach.
The Prep League looks to be very competitive once again, but Pasadena Poly and Flintridge Prep will be the class of the league. Poly will be going for its third straight girls’ league title, and VWS will aim to put pressure on foes like Westridge and Mayfield. Coach Rosenfeld save Flintridge Prep should win the boys league title, but the Gauls are hoping to challenge them for it. Rosenfeld says finishing ahead of both Chadwick and Poly is also a goal.

  • The Week @ Webb - Together in January

    Scott Nichols
The Week @ Webb is a periodic photojournal of events on and off Webb's campus. Did it feel like January lasted 31,000 days instead of just 31? I know that for me, it's important to spend as much time as I can with other people when life gets really busy. We all do better when we surround ourselves with friends and family and that's what I tried to capture in this latest gallery.
