Webb School of California Varsity Basketball Head Coach Rick Duque Records 100th Victory: “I Didn’t Win One Game, They Won”
With a 53-29 victory over St. Monica (Pasadena, CA) in the Calvary Baptist Tournament in La Verne, Duque scored his 100th win as Webb head coach. Following the game, Webb Athletic Director Steve Wishek presented Duque with a ball signed by some of his former players. Current Webb players also signed the ball. Following a team picture, Coach Duque was grateful for his time at Webb: “this is what I love to do, so I appreciate the opportunity from Webb and Mrs. [former Webb Head of Schools Susan] Nelson for hiring me, the athletic department for supporting me, and all the guys who played under me.” Senior guard Stephen Chai remarked that the accomplishment was “so low key.” In a way, that was a proper sentiment for a coach that has always been loved by the Webb community for his humility. “it’s all because of them,” said Duque of his players past and present, “I didn’t win one game, they won all those games not me.”
Rick Duque has been a coach at Webb for 12 years, and has been varsity basketball head coach for nine seasons. The Gauls made ten straight playoff appearances under Duque (2005-2015) and won Express League Titles the last two years in a row. He considers it a blessing that he has “the skills to be able to work with young men and to guide them and show them that nothing is ever given to them [so] hopefully when they leave this place they’re a little bit stronger mentally.”
Coach Duque was also grateful for the coaches he has had along the way for their guidance, from St. Francis High School in Mountain View, CA, to Pomona-Pitzer College where he was an All-American under current San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich. “I’ve been blessed with really good coaches so I take a little bit from them and each has molded me.”
The Webb Schools plan to honor Coach Duque on campus at a future home basketball game to recognize his 100 wins.

Webb swimmers finished their 2018 season in championship style last week. The rundown: two days, two proud coaches (Ken Rosenfeld & Tom Jurczak), seven broken/re-broken school records, and one Vivian Webb CIF champion (the first individual swimming CIF champion in VWS history)!
When some colleges are reporting less than a 5% admit rate (Harvard & Stanford) and many others remain in the single digits, it’s good to know that no matter how tough things get Webb students are well prepared for the challenge. Once again, our students beat the odds. The members of this year’s graduating class are to be congratulated for admission into some of the most sought-after colleges and universities in the U.S. and abroad. We saw 100% of the Class of 2018 admitted to a selective four-year college or university—90% will be attending a college ranked in the top 10% in the nation.
