Greg Gerken Wins First Game as WSC Soccer Head Coach

Frank Dariano
A 2-0 victory over San Dimas not only started the season on a positive note, it also gave Greg Gerken his first win as Webb soccer head coach. Following the game, Webb Athletic Director Steve Wishek presented Gerken with a ceremonial game ball. Gerken is a well-known  humanities teacher on the Webb Schools campus. Friday was his debut as head coach following two years as an assistant. Gerken began his tenure at Webb in 2014 and felt “pretty good” about the game, adding “the guys worked really hard, we had a few things that we wanted to work on.” Looking ahead, Gerken is optimistic about the season: “I’m excited about what we might be able to do.”

Friday’s victory was especially impressive in that the Gauls and Saints played under a high wind advisory. The summits of the nearby San Gabriel Mountains had projected gusts of 75 miles per hour during the game. Those gusts created a wind tunnel-like atmosphere during the game. Webb “did a good job of playing against the wind in the first half”, said Gerken. The Gauls came out on top thanks to goals by Lawrence Tsutsumi ’18 and Raian Ohtaka ’19. Tsutsumi said he was “proud to score that [first] goal [and] also to get that win for Mr. Gerken.”
