The Purpose of College: From The Washington Post

As Angel B. Perez writes in The Washington Post, “It’s not just about jobs. Colleges must help students find their passions.” Perez is the former vice president for admission and financial aid for Pitzer College in Claremont, and the current vice president for enrollment and student success at Trinity College in Connecticut. Of course, Hector Martinez, director of college guidance at Webb couldn’t agree more.

In this fascinating look into why we go to college, Perez offers a small bounty of resources for further reading, including books, articles and research studies. Perez dips into The Path to Purpose: How You People Find Their Calling in Life by William Damon, The Power of Meaning: Crafting a Life That Matters by Emily Smith, The Purposeful Graduate: Why Colleges Must Talk about Vocation by Tim Clydesdale, and even examines Stanford University’s course “Designing Your Life” offered by professors Bill Burnett and Dave Evans.

The necessity for this approach, looking beyond college as simply “job preparation,” is in the numbers, “today’s students may have between 10 to 14 jobs by the time they are 38 years old.” To read the article click here.
