Join Us for the Annual Alumni & Friends Peccary Trip

Meet at the Barstow campground for a weekend of hiking, fossil hunting, reconnecting with old friends and making new ones around the campfire. With this year’s abundance of rain and erosion, we expect a successful expedition. Kids are welcome to join us. If you have questions or would like to register, please contact Don Lofgren at DLofgren@webb.org.

Itinerary
Friday, May 5
The early birds will arrive at the campground before dinner to set up camp, complete with a cooking station with two barbeques, charcoal and lighter, gas stoves, coffee pots and cooking utensils. We will have an evening campfire to gather for conversation, cool beverages and more.
* Guests are welcome to arrive Friday evening or Saturday morning by 8:45am when we leave for the day. You will not be able to find us if you do not leave with the group.

Saturday, May 6
Just like Ray did with his students 50 years ago, the Museum will supply the same peccary pans and a breakfast of golden brown pancakes, bacon, and eggs. After breakfast, it’s out to the Badlands to search for the documents of life. We leave camp by 9:00am; please have arrived and be ready to go by 8:45am. We drive out to sites about 20 minutes away from the campground. If you can, please bring a high clearance vehicle, or ride with someone who does. The museum will supply the fossil collecting tools. We will be away from camp until 4:00pm, so pack a sack lunch to bring in your backpack. At the end of the day, it’s back to camp for a BBQ dinner and campfire gathering that includes a raffle for prizes and singing the Peccary Song. Museum Board Chair Larry Ashton ’70 leads the evening activities.

Sunday, May 7
After breakfast we will visit the original peccary site from 1936 where Bill Webb ’39 found the skull of a fossil pig, a discovery that inspired Ray Alf to pursue a career in paleontology. We will also hike around Rainbow Basin and see the beautiful Barstow Syncline. We will then return to the campground around 11:00am to pack up and head home.
