TV Deal for John Scalzi '87

Tor Books shared the exciting news that the television rights to John Scalzi '87’s The Collapsing Empire have gone to Working Title Television. The deal was brokered by Scalzi’s literary agent, Ethan Ellenberg and Joel Gotler of IPG. This has capped a week that saw The Collapsing Empire having the best first week sales of Scalzi’s titles, with Scalzi highlighting that he’s “sold more copies of it in a week than some of my novels (including at least one Hugo nominee) sold in their first year.” This is exciting news, and while it’s still obviously early in the process, it means that there may be more space opera coming to television in the near future.

Scalzi is the author of the bestselling Old Man's War series and the novel Red Shirts, which received a Hugo Award in 2013 for Best Novel. He has also written several nonfiction books, two of which have also received Hugo Awards. His blog, Whatever, is one of the most visited personal blogs on the Webb, with 8.2 million visits in 2012.

In March 2016, the Los Angeles Times named Scalzi one of 10 Critics-at-Large for their books pages. "With these 10 writers, we will investigate our culture through the conversations that books anchor, in deep dives and in real time. We will explore the mysteries of reading and writing; consider the achievements, acknowledged and under-acknowledged, of the writers who have come before; question the roles of race, heritage, class and gender in what we read; take on the vagaries of the publishing industry, and more."

Scalzi was last on the Webb campus in 2012 to spend time with students and teachers. He is currently on a book tour promoting his newest release, The Collapsing Empire, which will bring him to San Diego on April 20, Los Angeles Times Festival of Books on April 22-23, Vroman's in Pasadena on April 25, and Borderlands Books in San Francisco on April 27. • The Week @ Webb - Together in January

    Scott Nichols
The Week @ Webb is a periodic photojournal of events on and off Webb's campus. Did it feel like January lasted 31,000 days instead of just 31? I know that for me, it's important to spend as much time as I can with other people when life gets really busy. We all do better when we surround ourselves with friends and family and that's what I tried to capture in this latest gallery.
