National Award for Sittig '09 & UCLA Luskin Community Scholars Team
Dylan Sittig '09 is part of a UCLA's Luskin Community Scholars team which received a national award for their study on distribution of goods in the L.A. area. The Community Scholars Program is a joint initiative of the UCLA Department of Urban Planning and the UCLA Labor Center, where students can work with community stakeholders to focus on timely and important Los Angeles regioal issues. Dylan, who received his BA in Urban and Environmental Policy at Occidental College, is working on his master's in Urban and Regional Planning at UCLA.
For his capstone project, Dylan and a team of students researched the distribution of goods in southern California, which included field trips to the Alameda Corridor, a boat tour of the Port of Los Angeles and a tour of the massive Costco distribution center in the Inland Empire. They also heard from experts, organizations and activists concerned about the impact and future of goods movement in the region. Their findings were compiled in a paper titled, "Delivering the Good: Strategic Interventions Toward a Just and Sustainable Logistics System in Southern California," which was received the 2017 AICP Student Project Award, in the Applied Research category. The students will be recognized at the 2017 National Planning Conference in New York.
