George F. Getty ’42 (1924-1973)

George F. Getty ’42 (1924-1973) served as executive vice president and chief operating officer of Getty Oil until his death. The Getty Oil Company was founded by George’s father, J. Paul Getty, and grandfather, George Sr.

In 1904, George Getty Sr. moved from Minnesota to Oklahoma where he began a career as an independent oilman. Within two years, he had amassed a fortune from his Minnehoma Oil Company and moved his family to Los Angeles. In 1913, George lent his 21-year-old son Jean Paul money to invest in wells. By 1915, J.P. had made his first million, and the following year George and J.P. incorporated the Getty Oil Company.

Today, Getty Petroleum Corporation is one of the nation’s largest marketers of petroleum products and has sold and distributed on average one billion gallons of petroleum product per year for the past five years operating in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States.

While at Webb, George swam and ran on the track team; he was a member of the choir and Glee Club, the sports editor for Blue and Gold and he pursued leading roles in the Dramatic Club.
