On This Day: April 27, 2017 We Remember Al Hastings '42

Alfred B. Hastings, Jr. ’ 42 dedicated his life to The Webb Schools for over 50 years, including serving as Chairman of the Board for four years and trustee for 38 years. Al was a leader who not only committed his time and expertise, but was also a generous donor over the course of his lifetime.

Of his many important contributions, Al is most remembered for being an early proponent of establishing the Vivian Webb School: upon headmaster Stephen Longley’s untimely passing in 1979, it was his Stephen’s wife Ann who became the founding headmistress of Vivian Webb School.  In addition to this, Al was always a fierce proponent of growing Webb’s endowment; he established the Lluella Morey Murphy Endowment in support of student scholarships for this purpose. Indeed, per Thompson Webb himself, Al was of “an exceedingly fine character, dependable, trustworthy, and conscientious… of ability and… sure to measure up to any trust placed upon him.” And he did.  A true principe non homines.

Today, The Hastings Society serves to honor our dear friend Al, who passed away April 27, 2012. Alumni, parents, and friends who make a contribution to support Webb for three or more consecutive fiscal years become Hastings Society members. Membership is sustained as long as you continue to renew your support each year. For additional information on how you can become a member of The Hastings Society, contact Rose Gonzalez at (909) 482-5267 or rgonzalez@webb.org.

  • The Week @ Webb - Together in January

    Scott Nichols
The Week @ Webb is a periodic photojournal of events on and off Webb's campus. Did it feel like January lasted 31,000 days instead of just 31? I know that for me, it's important to spend as much time as I can with other people when life gets really busy. We all do better when we surround ourselves with friends and family and that's what I tried to capture in this latest gallery.
