Webb Tennis Coach Ron Martinez Celebrates 100 Career Wins

Frank Dariano
Ron Martinez notched his 100th career win as Webb School of California varsity tennis defeated Cerritos on Friday, April 28th.  Webb athletic director Steve Wishek presented Martinez with a plaque to mark the accomplishment. The team finished the regular season 17-2.

“I was floored, my reaction was, I didn’t know it was possible”, said Martinez of the milestone. Martinez has coached both Vivian Webb and Webb School of California Tennis since 2013, and says he simply hasn’t kept track of his wins.  “I’m in auto pilot with these kids, I have a blast with them.”

Martinez says he admires “the mystique of Webb”, as he puts it. “All these kids get motivated and they go ‘I need to be the one to step up’.” He says it has been amazing to watch leaders emerge as his best players graduate each year. For Vivian Webb, he pointed to Thea Kirkpatrick ‘18’s breakout season last fall after the team lost Megan Kotrappa ’16 to graduation. The same is true of Deepak Tummala ’17 and Tom Liu ’18 stepping up for Jeffrey Zhong ’16.

Vivian Webb Tennis captured its third consecutive San Joaquin League championship this fall under Martinez. Webb School of California Tennis is co-champions of the Ambassoder League this year, and  44-8 in the last three years. The team will compete in League playoffs this week.

With Martinez’s accomplishment, The Webb Schools celebrates a head coach reaching 100 wins at the school for the third time in the 2016-17 school year. Martinez joins WSC basketball’s Rick Duque and Webb Baseball’s Jeff Stodgel in the achievement.
