A state senator who served in the state legislature for 32 years, Newton R. Russell '45 represented the 21st District, which included Glendale, Burbank and Pasadena. He retired in 1996.
As the leading expert on pensions, Russell's legacy to the state, as reported in a Los Angeles Times article, included an actuarially sound state pension system, which he guarded against excesses. Russell's legislation put an end to pension inflating by eliminating the practice of converting perks, such as car allowances, into salary just before retirement. He also spearheaded a successful effort to protect retirees from having their pensions eaten up by inflation by funneling unanticipated state interest income to them.

Webb swimmers finished their 2018 season in championship style last week. The rundown: two days, two proud coaches (Ken Rosenfeld & Tom Jurczak), seven broken/re-broken school records, and one Vivian Webb CIF champion (the first individual swimming CIF champion in VWS history)!
