First Families of the American West: The Sheets Family

The Sheets family has enjoyed a long and productive relationship with The Webb Schools. Millard Jr. ’49 (Born-2006) worked as a field supervisor for Hamakua Sugar Co, was an executive director of the Big Island AIDS Project, and served as a captain in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam war. David Stary-Sheets ’57 (1939-2000) designed and built furniture and was a full time art dealer with the Stary-Sheets Fine Art gallery in Laguna Beach; he was considered an expert on California-style painters and revitalized interest in California Regionalism. John Sheets ’61, who is more familiarly known as Tony, is the owner of John A. Sheets Designs and has worked on public and private art commissions in the mediums of painting and sculpture. The three Sheets boys enjoyed their days at Webb, Millard Jr. attended the school for six years starting in the 7th grade as a day student and often rode his horse to campus. Their father, Millard Sheets was a renowned American painter and a representative of the California School of Painting who taught at Chouinard Art Institute, Otis Art Institute, and nearby Scripps College. During World War II, he was an artist-correspondent for Life magazine and the United States Army Air Forces in India and Burma. He was also director of the art exhibition at the Los Angeles County Fair for many years and brought world class art to Southern California. Millard Sheets served on the board of The Webb Schools for 13 years and designed the architecturally-unique, circular-shaped building that houses the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology. He is most well known for designing the mosaics for dozens of branch offices of Home Savings of America throughout California – he also designed the mosaic Peccary that greets visitors at the entry of the museum.
