William Doheny ’65 is the managing partner and chief investment officer of Doheny Asset Management, a company he founded in 1993. He has been managing investments for individual and institutional clients since 1975. Prior to founding the firm, he was the managing director of U.S. Trust of California. Will received a B.A. in History from Stanford University, and a J.D. from Loyola Law School. He serves on the Board of the Los Angeles Police Memorial Foundation and the Doheny Eye Institute. He is a current member and past 10-year chairman of the Investment Committee for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
Will is the great-grandson of E.L. Doheny, one of the founders of the Southern California oil industry; in 1892, along with business partner Charles A. Canfield, E.L. drilled the first successful oil well in the Los Angeles Oil Field, setting off the petroleum boom in Southern California. He later helped spur the California oil boom of the early 1900s by persuading railroads to switch from coal to oil as power for their locomotives. Doheny was also a pioneering oil producer in Mexico. Will’s father, William Henry Doheny Sr., also worked in the oil and gas industry and served for 36 years on the Unocal Corp. board. The Doheny family has enjoyed a long history of philanthropy in California: the family donated a great deal of its land in Dana Point to establish Doheny State Beach, and the Doheny Estate has donated money for the construction of buildings and residence halls to Loyola Marymount University and the land for one of the campuses of Mount St. Mary's College south of downtown Los Angeles, they supported the construction of St. Vincent de Paul Church and built the Edward L. Doheny, Jr. Memorial Library at the University of Southern California.
At Webb, Will played tennis and ran cross country. He was Vice President of the Debate Society and of the Chapel Guild; he was the business manager of, and wrote for, El Espejo. Will’s wife is Libby Fraim, sister of Will’s Webb classmates John Fraim ’67 and Bill Fraim ’70.
