New Research Publications for Webb Students and Faculty at Alf Museum
By Dr. Andrew Farke
Congratulations are due to Will Abersek ’17, Chandler Luebbers ’17, and Emily Chu ’17, on the recent publication of their research. Their work appears in the 2017 Desert Symposium Field Guide and Proceedings, published by the California State University Desert Studies Center.
Abersek’s paper, "Biostratigraphy of nonmarine Miocene gastropods from the Barstow Formation of California," discusses the occurrence of fossil snails near Barstow, featuring many specimens collected by Webb students, faculty, and alumni over the past 70 years. The Barstow Formation was formed during a time of great climatic change, and so this paper and others from the Alf Museum helps lay groundwork for a better understanding of this very timely issue!
Luebbers and Chu's paper, "A preliminary restudy of felid footprints housed at the Alf Museum from the Barstow Formation (Miocene) of southern California" discusses some rare cat tracks, also collected by various Webb/Alf expeditions. They discovered that previous research on the footprints probably overestimated the number of species represented in the sample.
Last, Dr. Don Lofgren and several recent alumni (Gabe Gosney ‘14, Chloe Soltis ‘13, Kristina Oney ‘14, and Lauren West ’14) had a paper published last month in Paludicola, titled "New records of Kimbetohia campi and Xanclomys mcgrewi (Mammalia, Multituberculata) from the Fort Union Formation of the Great Divide Basin, Wyoming." This work was completed while all of them were students at Webb, and highlights some important fossil mammals that show a much broader geographic range for the species than previously expected.
Copies of the publications are included here. In addition to these and other research publications, students and staff have participated in professional presentations, public outreach events, and much more. And there's lots more on the horizon, too, so stay tuned!
We are pleased and excited to announce the appointment of Jennifer Liu as Webb’s Director of Parent Relations and Special Events effective November 1. An opportunity to pick the brain of award-winning author John Scalzi '87, is not one you want to miss. Discussing topics ranging from what exactly defines a burrito to what projects he currently has in production, there's never a dull moment with Scalzi.
For Webb sports fans who can’t attend a game, or if you’d like to follow along with the live stats and scores from our athletic contests, most of our home games will be covered live with video and play-by-play at The NFHS Network.
There is no greater testament to The Webb Schools' values, culture of service and leadership than our extraordinary alumni. Through our annual Alumni Awards program, the Alumni Council and the Board of Trustees honor alumni whose service and achievements truly exemplify the qualities and values that Webb represents. We are pleased to announce the five distinguished recipients of Webb's 2018 Alumni Awards.
To learn more about working in independent schools and meet with school representatives about open positions, please join Webb and 30 other participants on Saturday, February 23 from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm at Harvard-Westlake School in Studio City.
