Annual Alumni & Friends Barstow Peccary Trip

Each spring the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology team leads a group of alumni, parents, and friends to Barstow, CA for a traditional peccary trip. In true Ray Alf fashion, we traverse the Mud Hills looking for fossils, fry some golden-brown pancakes over a campfire, and reconnect with old friends.

Over the weekend of May 5-7, 2017 we had one of our larger groups yet--82 people! Alumni from classes spanning 1954 to 2009 were represented, and some traveled from as far away as New York or Utah to attend.

The rainy winter made for excellent fossil prospecting. Our group found plenty of horse and camel bones, but the biggest finds were a 6" piece of an elephant tusk and an upoper jaw of a horse with four beautiful teeth; valuable additions to our collections!

With a strong presence from the women of Webb, stories shared round the campfire were enthusiastic and poignant. As Emily Hammett '05 describes it, "After Webb, we all go onto college and end up getting busy with life. Between work, family and fun we don't get many opportunities to come together with our old friends. I love reconnecting with my Webb family on the Alumni Peccary Trips. It's amazing how years can fly by without seeing each other, but the moment we're back together in Barstow we're able to pick up right where we left off. It's also a great opportunity to meet alumni and friends who didn't go to Webb during my four years."

The Alf Museum is much more than a unique component of The Webb Schools. We serve the public with daily tours, and have grown to be an accomplished research institution serving the international scientific community. Webb students have had their research published in scientific journals in recent weeks, and one of our prized specimens, the most complete baby hadrosaur of its type, affectionately named "Dino Joe," has returned from a year-long Dino Expo exhibition throughout Japan. What started as "the little museum on the hill," has grown to be truly world-class. Please contact our Director, Dr. Don Lofgren, at dlofgren@webb.org to learn more about our 25th Annual Peccary Society Dinner on October 20, 2017, or to be personally notified of the 2018 Alumni & Friends Peccary Trip.

  • About Art School

In an expose of sorts, one pegged to the publication of Gary Alan Fine’s new book Talking Art (U of Chicago Press, 2018), Charlie Tyson explores the facts and fictions surrounding MFA programs in the visual arts in America. A review of Fine’s book finds that seven of the 10 most expensive higher-education institutions in the U.S. are, in fact, art schools. But is it worth it? Maybe, if you want to be a professional artist. Tyson’s article also notes that more than half of the top 250 best-selling American artists at auction have an MFA.
