Softball headed to second round of CIF, Albert Zhang '18 gives Badminton its first ever appearance at State

Softball: Vivian Webb Varsity Softball opened the 2017 CIF-Southern Section Division Six playoffs on May 18th with an 8-2 victory over University Prep (Victorville). The Gauls struck early, hanging two runs on the Jaguars in the bottom of the first, followed by five more in the second. Emily Chu ’17, fresh off a record breaking performance at the CIF-Southern Section Division Three Swimming Finals, went two for three with a pair of RBI’s. Chloe Stewart ’20 and Thea Kirkpatrick ‘18 also had two RBI’s each. Chandler Luebbers ’17 pitched a complete game allowing just seven hits and striking out three. She has a 1.11 ERA on the year, and the Gauls are hitting .395 as a team.

Webb (17-4) will travel to Carpinteria for its second-round game on May 23rd. A victory over Carpinteria would set up a quarterfinal matchup on May 25th against either Sierra Canyon or Pasadena Poly.

Tennis:
Three members of Webb School of California varsity tennis are getting ready for an early morning at the CIF Individuals Tournament set for this Thursday morning, May 25th. Tom Liu ’18 will compete in the boys’ singles tournament while Kia Nalbandi ’18 and Juan Pablo Calderoni ’19 will team up in the boys’ doubles tournament. Registration begins at 7:45 AM at The University of Redlands. All three players are expected to be leaders for Coach Ron Martinez’s team in 2018.

Badminton:
Albert Zhang ’18 made history over the weekend by becoming the first Webb badminton player to compete in the CIF State Badminton Championships. Albert finished in sixth place in the boys’ southern area singles bracket on May 20th at the San Gabriel Valley Badminton Club in El Monte. He led all Webb badminton players in scoring this season, and was named team Most Valuable Player at the team’s end of season banquet last Tuesday.

Track and Field:
Three members of the Webb Track and Field team competed in the 2017 CIF-Southern Section Division Four Finals on May 20th at Cerritos College. Representing Webb School of California, Jeffrey Ran ’18 finished in eighth place in the boys’ pole vault. For Vivian Webb School, Kelli Henry ’18 finished in eighth in the girls’ high jump. Dylan Wensley ’17 finished in sixth place in the girls’ pole vault and seventh place in the girls’ long jump.

    Jean E. Miller In Memoriam

    We learned from Jinx Tong (VWS dean from 1991-1996, and director of residence from 1983-1991) that Jean E. Miller passed away on Tuesday, May 22 at the age of 90 years old.   
     
    Jean was born in Brockton, Massachusetts in 1928. She attended Pembroke College (the coordinate women’s college to Brown University) and graduated with an A.B. in English in 1949. She enjoyed a long and celebrated career as an educator in private schools across the country.

  • Webb 2018 Commencements in Pictures

    On Saturday, June 2, members of the Class of 2018 were welcomed into the hallowed ranks of Webb alumni. At 10:30 a.m. on Faculty Field, 50 Vivian Webb girls received their diplomas. Entrepreneur and educator Melissa Barnes Dholakia ’87 provided an engaging, memorable commencement address. Barnes Dholakia is a founder of MBD Partners which supports new and existing public K-12 schools in areas of school design, goal setting, monitoring and performance reporting. Her work focuses on increasing opportunities and outcomes for students, especially the educationally underserved.
     
    At 5:00 p.m. on the Alamo Lawn, World-Series ring-bearer Jeff Luhnow ’84 offered his career in Major League Baseball as a parable in perseverance and unbounded thinking to 49 Webb School of California boys. Luhnow is the general manager of the Houston’s Astros; he was previously the vice president of scouting and player development for MLB’s St. Louis Cardinals.
