Celebrating a Legacy: The Barbara Mott McCarthy Aquatics Center
This month marks the 20th anniversary of the passing of Barbara Mott McCarthy, whose name adorns Webb’s new aquatics center. Made possible by a leadership gift from Avery McCarthy ’52, the Barbara Mott McCarthy Aquatics Center is an elite facility for water polo, swimming, and diving.
Opened in 2013, the McCarthy Aquatic Center’s twelve lanes include 10 for competition and 2 for warm-up/cool-down, a Colorado Time System—the same one utilized at nationwide events held by US Diving, US Water Polo, and also seen at the NCAA Championships and Olympic Team Trials.
In addition to the full-size water polo course with floating goals, the new rim flow design maintains precise water level and ensures consistent times (quelling waves rebounding from the wall, which slow the times of competitors in outside lanes).
There is a state-of-the-art scoreboard and timing system, including touch-pads, a 3.5’ to 13’ depth range with diving board, an up-to-date public address system, and remodeled locker rooms and new landscaping.
The new center can now host CIF games and provides a beneficial home team advantage. The pool’s temperature controls keep the water at a constant 78-79 degrees Fahrenheit, making it easier to continue practice past sunset.
