Week of Sports, September 4-9

Cross Country
Cross country traveled to the Fastback Shootout in Arcadia on September 2 to compete in a 2-mile, non-league event.

VWS ran different races based on grade level. The freshmen were led by Lily Miller '21 (12:17.5) while Anne Lofgren '19 (13:59.0) and Sarah Hebb '18 (13:59.8) finished seconds apart in higher grade level races. Senior Madison Steinorth finished as Webb’s fourth runner, earning a varsity spot for the first time since her sophomore year (after rebuilding during much of last year’s season).

WSC team highlights include Lawrence Tsutsumi 18 finishing within the top 10 for the seniors’ race. Eric Evans '19 finished in the top 30 for his grade and is a newcomer this year. Jackson Bibbens '18 finished within the top 20 for the senior race. —Allegra McDermott ‘18

WSC Football
Webb varsity football kicked off their third game of the season at Damien on Friday, September 8. They competed against a strong rival from last year, La Quinta, who is currently ranked fourth in CIF. The Gauls struggled at first as six flags were thrown in the first seven minutes, but came back with two touchdowns made by Nick Johnson '19 and Spencer Easley '18. Zachary “Bobi” Hamman '18 made a great tackle for defense as Simon Dawson 19 and other key players assisted. It was a tough game that ended with a final score of 51-14 in favor of La Quinta. —Maddie Stoddard ‘18

WSC Water Polo
The WSC water polo team had a busy week with a game against Glendora High School on Tuesday and a 3-day tournament on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Tuesday’s game was an intense back and forth affair. New freshman Max Fargo was a key player showing his skills with many steals and spin moves.

Senior goalie, Euson Hui, defended the team with many saves throughout the game. Four-year varsity player, Phil Kraus, made a game-changing goal in the last minute with the tie-breaking goal that presented Webb with the win for their first game of the week. The final score was an 8-7 Webb win.

The Ayala tournament on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday was a good warm-up to the new season. Webb won one of the five games they played all three days. The winning game was against Citrus Valley High School ending with a 9-8 win for the Gauls. Phil Kraus had many outside 5-meter shots that led the team to the close victory. The second game on Thursday was a loss against Rancho Cucamonga, 11-19. The first game on Friday was a loss against Alta Loma, 5-12. For the last day of the tournament, many of the players were ill and not performing at their highest level, which caused the team to suffer during the last leg of the tournament. The first game on Saturday was a loss to Damien, 7-9. The second game on Saturday was a loss to Canyon, 11-12. Overall, the week was a good warm-up to the upcoming league games throughout the season for the boys and a good learning experience for Coach Kalter and all his players. —Sonia Malik ‘18

VWS Volleyball
VWS volleyball’s opening season has been challenge for the young team. At the Garey Tournament, the Gauls lost games in three to Don Lugo, San Dimas, Ontario, and Montclair. The Ontario game in particular was a close loss (25-20, 25-19, 25-20). Losing definitely does not mean failing and if the players learn from their errors to improve and develop their practice, then the season is no doubt worth the fight. —Ivy Liu '19
