Parents Weekend Brings Hundreds to Campus

Over 450 parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and siblings visited Webb earlier this month for Parents Weekend 2017, and experienced a day in the life of a Webb student.

Whether it was grabbing breakfast and lunch in Price Dining Hall, or attending class with students in the lab, art studio or state-of-the-art classrooms, parents experienced a Webb education first hand. Parents met teachers in each class and got a sense of Webb's challenging, diverse and unique curriculum.

Outside the classroom, families gathered on campus to watch the Gauls football team in action with food from The Habit truck, and parents got a chance to meet one another during a reception at Casa425 in the Claremont Village.

After Friday's morning classes, Head of Schools Taylor Stockdale spoke about the state of the schools and plans for their future, including the accreditation of the schools this year. He also recognized this year's coaches of the year, Ken Rosenfeld and Tom Jurczak, the winner of the Joann Robinson Staff Distinguished Service Award, Rebeca Torres, and this year's Perry Award winners: Andy Farke, John Lawrence, Howie Kalter, and Melanie Bauman.

Parents joined students for the rest of their classes before the schools' annual Affiliates Benefit Friday night. Themed "Dream. Plan. Do.", the benefit supported ongoing activities and opportunities for Webb students to learn and grow. With help from a record number of volunteers, and the generous support of parents and faculty, over $270,000 was raised at the benefit.

Then on Saturday, parents had breakfast with student advisors and teachers before a presentation and discussion relevant to their child's class. Parents of freshman and sophomore students discussed how to make the most of Webb with engagement in classes, on campus leadership, clubs and weekends at Webb, experiential learning and summer programs. Junior and senior parents discussed topics including college and beyond, the schools' elective program, college guidance and admission, and the Webb alumni network and its regional events.

Take a look at a few moments from Parents Weekend 2017 below.

  • About Art School

In an expose of sorts, one pegged to the publication of Gary Alan Fine’s new book Talking Art (U of Chicago Press, 2018), Charlie Tyson explores the facts and fictions surrounding MFA programs in the visual arts in America. A review of Fine’s book finds that seven of the 10 most expensive higher-education institutions in the U.S. are, in fact, art schools. But is it worth it? Maybe, if you want to be a professional artist. Tyson’s article also notes that more than half of the top 250 best-selling American artists at auction have an MFA.
