Alumna's Short Film, 'Waterfall,' Nominated at Film Festival

Jessica Rice ’12
A short film directed and produced by Yiwa Lau ’12 was nominated at the Glendale International Film Festival last month.

Lau said "Waterfall" was "more or less inspired" by her own story. It "revolves around Vivian, who is looking for love and tries her best to escape what seems as constant rejection throughout her life," she said.

The film was shot in March, 2017 with a crew of about 30 international people including a director of photography from the Netherlands, Lau said. It was her graduation film for the Beijing Film Academy, and is in the fashion film genre.

"I deliberately focused on a lot of clothing and the way the actors moved in the material as well as the colors to portray the emotions that I wanted to evoke in the film," she said.

"Waterfall" was screened during the opening night of the festival at the Americana at Brand in Glendale. Lau could not attend because she is in London volunteering in an arts internship as part of Youth With a Mission, a Christian-based organization. But some of her friends from the class of 2012 went to the screening.

In summer 2015, Lau participated in a Webb@Work program with Emmy award-winning producer Kip Konwiser ’81. She said it gave her "a positive perspective of the film industry."

"He answered many questions I had and always had his interns best interests in mind," she added.

Looking forward, Lau is considering opportunities in film production, but would love to explore working more hands-on with fashion or fashion media.

You can watch "Waterfall" below.
