Shyam and Ellie's poster represents a combination of their summer research at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, where they studied HPV-induced cervical cancer in zebra fish, and their independent study here at Webb with Sally Mingarelli this year, where they are studying BPA-induced cancer in zebra fish embryos. They are looking at the mechanism of DNA mutation in viral vs. environmentally induced cancers --- studying specifically the methylation patterns of DNA during differentiation. Their work is a combination of biotechnology and organic chemistry.
As their mentor, Mrs. Mingarelli will be accompanying them to the conference. Their work is being funded by the Unbounded Creativity in Science Award that both Shyam and Ellie received and the Demetriades Prize for Unbounded Teaching that Mrs. Mingarelli received at graduation last year.
Join the conversation. The Spring/Summer issue of WEBB Magazine is in the mail and on its way to you.
