Mowjood Collection's 20th Anniversary
by Ron Hastings
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Dr. Muhammad Rizvi Mowjood Memorial Collection on Islamic Studies of the W. Russell Fawcett Memorial Library of The Webb Schools. I never met Dr. Mowjood; he died before I arrived at Webb in 1999. But one of the first people I did meet, at least by phone, was his widow, Mrs. Rehana Mowjood, who some years earlier, along with her sons Rahmi ’90, Siraj and Sharaf, founded the collection and established an endowment in honor of her late husband. From then until now, Mrs. Mowjood’s dedication to his legacy has been remarkably constant.

Webb - Hot Off The Press
There is always something to celebrate at Webb. In just the first half of the school year, we’ve seen: the installation of Taylor Stockdale, Head of Schools, the “grand” re-opening of the Hall of Life, fantastic early admission news from the college guidance office along with alumni profiles and, of course, news from your classmates in NewsNotes. All of this is highlighted and celebrated in the latest edition of Webb magazine.

The iPad Potential
As an historian, I’m not easily impressed by pronouncements of dramatic change in education. Yes, the World Wide Web, hand-held digital devices, and multimedia software have the potential to truly alter learning, but the key word here is “potential.” After all, the lecture should have died soon after the printing press was invented in the 15th century, yet, as we all know, it is still used in college classrooms. Why lecture when students themselves can read information in books? People have also predicted the demise of traditional classroom teaching with the explosion of the Internet. What does it mean to teach when students can find all of the answers online?
