Rosetta Lee Visits Webb

The Webb Schools began its second semester on Wednesday with a modified schedule in order to invite Rosetta Lee, a faculty member from Seattle Girls School and national leader in diversity education, to work with faculty, staff and students on inclusivity and diversity at Webb. The student assembly was part of an ongoing effort by Webb to educate the community on issues of gender, race, identity and self.

Today’s special assembly is a way for us to be proactive in terms of thinking about our community at Webb and how to make it a welcoming and safe space for everyone. Hopefully, you’ll leave today with some language, skills, and tangible ways to lean into difficult conversations and learn how to engage with any member of the community in a productive, respectful, and inclusive way,” said Michael Hoe, director of studies, in his introduction of Rosetta Lee.

Rosetta Lee addressed students in the Les Perry Gymnasium in order to facilitate small breakout groups of students and faculty in attendance. As one of the nation’s top experts on cross cultural communication, identity development and anti-bias learning, Ms. Lee walked students through topics such as cultural competency and navigating microaggressions. As she offered personal stories of learning the nuances of communicating between different groups based on real and perceived biases, she often paused for members of the audience to reflect on their own experiences and share within their groups.

In addition to the larger assembly of the Webb community, Rosetta Lee also presented to a combined faculty and staff group and at smaller gatheringswith classroom educators with the aim of facilitating compassionate dialogs in the workplace and classroom.
