Stephen Farley ’81 to Unveil Community Art Installation at New Pomona Light Rail Train Station
Stephen Farley ’81 will debut his latest tilography installation, The Power of Pomona is People, on Saturday, July 26 at 9:30 a.m. at the new Pomona North Metrolink/Metro Light Rail Station, located less than 3 miles south of The Webb Schools on Garey Avenue.
Based on his design concept, Stephen was selected by the City of Pomona’s Station Design and Art Review Committee in 2005. Through over 20 years of collaboration with the Pomona community, Stephen created a public art display to honor the everyday heroes of Pomona and connect the city’s past with its future. During the selection process, Pomona community members contributed images, stories, and “power statements” about Pomonans who made a difference in their lives. Stephen, along with the Foothill Gold Line Authority, collaboratively made the final selection of 56 Pomonans who will be featured at the Pomona North station. Each honoree’s likeness will be featured alongside a statement expressing how they positively impacted the community.
The installation utilizes the tilography technique developed by Stephen to translate photographs onto ceramic tile and will help transform the station into a vibrant public gathering space that celebrates the heart and soul of Pomona for decades to come.
Stephen, a native of Pomona Valley and Webb alumnus, is an accomplished artist based in Tucson, Arizona. He has an extensive resume of community-centered public art projects across the U.S., including in Phoenix, Broward County (Florida), San Jose, and more. Stephen’s artwork can also be found at Webb in McMillin Park. Installed in 2022, the artwork and outdoor area honor the legacy of faculty member Laurence McMillin and was commissioned by the Class of 1967.
The Pomona North Metrolink/Metro Light Rail Station is a part of the Foothill Gold Line Extension, which expands the LA Metro A Line light rail system into the Inland Valley and will connect the area to Los Angeles and Long Beach. LA Metro will determine and announce when passenger service begins. The station is currently serviced by the Metrolink San Bernardino Line.
