Badminton

Badminton has grown in participation and success over the last 10 years. VWS and WSC compete together as a single team. Webb badminton captured league championship titles in 2011 and 2012. In 2012, the team was crowned CIF runner-up.

The badminton team aims to compete in CIF finals each year and never forgets to have fun and improve its skills. Competing against schools with up to 3,000 students, Webb’s badminton team has not only earned respect, but gained a reputation as the team to beat.

Sujata Sheth, Varsity Badminton Coach

Coach Sujata Sheth has a long history with The Webb Schools. Her children graduated from Webb (Saahil ’03, Raahi ’07 and Eshaana ’10) and she has coached the badminton team for 15 years.

She launched the first badminton program in Claremont at Foothill Country Day School in 2005, and has been coaching ever since. Sheth played competitive professional badminton at the national level for several years before starting a career in law. She was nationally ranked both as a junior and adult.

Sheth said the phenomenal interest in the program from the Webb community has been wonderful, as well as the sincerity and dedication with which the athletes take up the challenge of learning the sport.

“My coaching is geared toward enriching each individual player with an understanding and appreciation of all the fine aspects of badminton and the ability to apply the skills that they learn beyond the badminton court,” she said.

She also strives to build her athletes’ self-esteem by having fun, being a part of the “badminton family” and helping them develop a deep passion for the game.
