From the Head of School

August 1, 2024

Dear Webb Community,

I am always excited to have the opportunity to welcome our students and families to campus at the start of the year. It is a time marked with incredible joy and possibility, and this year is particularly special. This is an historic moment for our school, a significant milestone that will shape our future. As we embark on the 2024–25 academic year, we proudly bring together the Webb School of California, founded in 1922, and the Vivian Webb School, founded in 1981, into one Webb.

We certainly have grown from our modest beginnings, when Thompson and Vivian Webb arrived in California with a dream and camped next to the Old School House, then the only structure on campus. Today, we are an internationally recognized boarding and day school with 400 students and 4,700 alumni across the country and around the globe. Our campus footprint and facilities have expanded to 150 acres to serve our innovative academic program. Our growth is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our entire community.

To mark this special occasion, we have worked to refine our visual identity—it brings together Webb’s extraordinary heritage and boundless future in timeless design. Our school colors—navy blue and white—are drawn from both Webb School of California and Vivian Webb School. We will continue to use gold and Unbounded Blue as accent colors for added elegance and energetic fun.

When students and families arrive in a few weeks, they will be welcomed by new campus banners and a number of recently completed capital improvements, including a new roof on Fawcett Library, and an updated fleet of Suburbans and minivans. And, shortly after school begins, we will open the new Huang Innovation Wing in Fawcett Library, offering students and faculty greater connectivity and access to state-of-the-art technology.

In short, there’s a lot to look forward to this year. Some that are new—unified Signing-In and Honor Pledge Ceremonies, a new Honor & Leadership Symposium, and the launch of a new strategic planning process to articulate our shared vision for the next 100. And, much that has been part of the Webb experience since our founding—academic exploration and discovery, leadership education, character development, community celebration, friendship and more. Here’s to a bright and successful 2024–25 school year.

With excitement,
Theresa Smith, Ph.D.
Head of School
